Los Angeles Chargers and former Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh has been added to a federal lawsuit involving a former assistant who allegedly illegally hacked into the personal accounts of female college athletes.
The former assistant is Matthew Weiss, who served as the quarterbacks coach and later co-offensive coordinator for Harbaugh and the Wolverines in 2021 and 2022. Weiss stands accused of 24 crimes, including 14 counts of “unauthorized access to computers” and another 10 linked to “aggravated identity theft.”
Prosecutors allege Weiss began the behavior in 2015, at which point he was employed by the Baltimore Ravens. But they then noted that Weiss used his position at Michigan to gain unauthorized access to databases that allowed him to obtain “personally identifiable information and medical data of more than 150,000 athletes. ”
Both former Michigan president Santa Ono and current athletic director Warde Manuel were added to the suit in addition to Harbaugh. Ono was recently proposed as a candidate for the same position at the University of Florida, but the university’s Board of Governors ultimately voted against his hiring
“Harbaugh led and encouraged a culture within the football program that resulted in a complete lack of oversight or protection for non-football student athletes,” the lawsuit alleges. “Had Harbaugh implemented basic oversight of his staff, plaintiffs…would have been protected against predators such as Weiss.”
Lawyers representing more than 80 female student athletes across the country claim that the suit will show that Harbaugh, Manuel and others in leadership positions knew about Weiss’ actions and opted not to act due to the high stakes of the upcoming game.
Neither Harbaugh nor representatives for the Chargers or Michigan Wolverines have responded to the most recent allegations. Weiss is now facing 13 civil cases in addition to the criminal charges against him.
