The first half of the New York Jets preseason game against the Green Bay Packers is in the books, and the Jets are leading the Packers, 17 – 3.
The game opened with the Jets on defense, and they quickly forced a three and out as Jordan Love inexplicably chose to pick on Sauce Gardner. That didn’t end well for Love.
The Jets took over on offense and went right down the field as Justin Fields hooked up with Andrew Beck for a couple of chain moving connections. The drive ended in a Fields scramble for a touchdown as the Justin Fields era got off to about as positive a start as could be hoped for with the Jets.
The Jets first team defense then shut down the Packers first team offense again, forcing a punt and retaining an early 7 – 0 lead.
On the ensuing Jets drive the backups filtered in for both teams. Brady Cook took over at quarterback for the Jets and had them past midfield as the first quarter ended. The drive ended early in the second quarter as Braelon Allen was stopped on a fourth and 1 deep in Packers territory.
Early in the second quarter the Packers were driving courtesy of a pair of dumb penalties by the Jets on defense when Tony Adams pulled up lame in the secondary. One thing you hate to see is injuries in these games, but they’re part of the process. Hopefully Adams makes a speedy recovery. The Packers drive bogged down and they settled for a field goal to make the score 7 -3 in favor of the Jets.
The Jets next drive sputtered and a great punt and punt coverage pinned the Packers inside their five yard line. A few plays later Leonard Taylor broke through for a strip sack, Jay Tufule recovered the ball in the end zone and the Jets had a 14 – 3 lead.
Late in the half Ja’Markis Weston recovered a fumbled punt, giving the Jets the ball inside the Packers 10 yard line. The Jets offense went nowhere and they had to settle for a short field goal by Harrison Mevis and a 17 – 3 lead with less than two minutes left in the half. The half ended with no further scoring.
We go into the second half with the Jets leading the Packers 17 – 3.
