The New York Jets‘ 2025 campaign may be over before it has started after starting quarterback Justin Fields suffered a worrisome lower leg injury in practice on Thursday.

“Jets QB Justin Fields was carted to the locker room after suffering an apparent injury during practice,” NFL insider Ari Merov wrote in a post on X.

The injury occurred after being pressured on an incomplete pass. He was carted off the field and taken to the medical tent. The 26-year-old was then driven to the team’s facilities, where he reportedly was able to walk on his own power. While it is unclear what the injury is, New York fans will surely fear it is a torn Achilles. An injury they became very familiar with when Aaron Rodgers suffered the same injury months after being acquired by the team in 2023.

The former Chicago Bears first-round pick just made his Jets debut at training camp yesterday. The one-time Ohio State star was the biggest splash the organization made in free agency this spring when they gave him a two-year deal worth $40 million.

What is New York Jets QB depth chart after Justin Fields?

Mike Greenberg reacts live to reports of Justin Fields' injury: "I turn to others to speak on my behalf, because quite candidly, if I were to speak right now, I don't know how well that would go for anyone. The Jets and new head coach Aaron Glenn are resting a lot of hopes on the four-year veteran. And the proof is in the players they have behind him on the depth chart. If Fields is done for the season or misses a significant amount of time, the next man up is journeyman backup Tyrod Taylor.

Taylor is one of the better backups in the league. But the reason he has never been able to hold on to a starting job is because of his own extensive injury history. After him are undrafted rookies Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook. Suffice it to say, the Jets’ options after Fields are average at best.

If he is done for the year, they will likely take a hard look at the trade or free agent market for a veteran signal caller to add something of worth to their QB room.
