Many NFL fans and pundits have chalked up the 2026 New York Jets as a tanking team already, and it’s only June. Whenever a conversation about the No. 1 pick in the 2027 NFL Draft comes up, the Jets are at the top of the list. Some New York fans are already dreaming about Arch Manning wearing green in 2027.

Of course, they’re already thinking about proving all of those people wrong in the Big Apple. Aaron Glenn is back as head coach, but the rest of the coaching staff and some of the roster around him has been retooled. Most notably, former Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich is in as the new offensive coordinator and veteran Geno Smith is back with the Jets as the staring quarterback.

Smith’s stock is extremely low after a disastrous 2025 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, but he is looking for a bounce-back this fall. In a positive turn of events for Jets fans, the former New York second-round pick is already making a good impression on Reich.

The new OC talked about Smith’s mind on Wednesday at mandatory minicamp, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.

“I am just so impressed by Geno,” Reich said. “I cannot express that enough. Man, he is on point. His preparation is top notch. His football mind is elite.”

Smith clearly still has the talent to be a serviceable starting quarterback in the NFL. He was traded to Las Vegas following what was a pretty successful stint with the Seattle Seahawks following the 2024 season. However, a very poor situation in Las Vegas led to a terrible year on the worst team in the NFL.

Unfortunately, things aren’t going to get much easier for Smith from a talent perspective on this Jets roster. While he does have a decent offensive line to work with and a pair of talented skill players in Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson to work with, the depth of skill players just isn’t there. Rookies Omar Cooper Jr. and Kenyon Sadiq will have to have big seasons in order for this New York offense to exceed expectations.
