The New York Jets have a new offensive coordinator. Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand will be running the Jets offense in 2025.

It felt like this move was a formality once the Lions filled Engstrand’s job with former Stanford head coach David Shaw.

Engstrand worked in Detroit from 2020 through 2024 starting in low level offensive assistant and quality control coach roles. He rose to become the Lions’ tight ends coach and finally their passing game coordinator.

The Lions have one of the best constructed passing games in the league. Quarterback Jared Goff has revitalized his career since the trade the Lions acquired him four years ago. How much of the credit goes to Engstrand verus Ben Johnson and the players themselves is difficult to say. I would say, however, that Engstrand fits the profile of the type of coach the Jets should be looking to run their offense, a young guy exposed to modern concepts from a good coaching tree.
