PITTSBURGH — Newly signed Pittsburgh Steelers guard Nick Broeker will wear No. 61 for the club. Center Mason Cole in 2023 was the last Steeler to don No. 61.

The Steelers signed Broeker last Wednesday. Broeker spent the last two seasons with the Houston Texans, but was waived on May 9.

The 24-year-old is a 6-foot-4 3/8, 305-pound lineman out of Ole Miss who was seventh-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in the 2023 NFL Draft.

He did not make the Bills’ initial roster coming out of training camp in 2023, and was claimed on waivers by the Houston Texans on Aug. 30, 2023.

With Houston, Broeker played in 12 games over two seasons, but appeared in just nine snaps of offense, all of which came at right guard.

Over four seasons at the University of Mississippi, Broeker primarily played left tackle, but moved to left guard as a senior in 2022. He was the winner of the 2022 Kent Hull Trophy, given to the top offensive lineman in Mississippi. He was also a second-team All-America selection and first-team All-SEC player.

In pre-draft testing, Broeker tested poorly on the bench press with 23 reps, but showed good acceleration, with a 1.76-second 10-yard split on his 6.53-second 40-yard dash. His overall Relative Athletic Score was an 8.21 out of 10.

A Springfield, Illinois native, Broeker was a four-star prospect coming out of Sacred Heart-Griffin High School.

The move to add Broeker came one day after the Steelers released guard Lecitus Smith, who was placed on waivers last Tuesday. Smith previously occupied No. 61.
