Jerry Jones suggests Micah Parsons should take less for sake of overall team ‘puzzle’

The Dallas Cowboys begin their regular season two weeks from today. At this exact moment in time, the best player on their team has not formally practiced with the group. Micah Parsons remains in the middle of contract extension talks with the team, a matter so silly that on Wednesday evening he was sitting on a chair during practice. We are way past the point of absurdity and his absence, even if he is physically present, is clearly beyond a distraction now.

Cowboys owner, general manager and president Jerry Jones made a TV appearance on Thursday on FOX News Channel’s FOX & Friends, and he was asked about the Parsons situation and how close they were to a deal. Jerry did not really answer that, but he noted that the team is trying to put together an overall puzzle and intimated that Parsons should be taking less in the name of the greater good, so to speak.

Jerry referred to the overall team structure as a puzzle and, living within the analogy, Parsons as a piece within it. This is similar to the infamous pie analogy that he, Stephen Jones and even recently now Charlotte Jones have all used to discuss the perils of managing an NFL salary cap.

No one is trying to call anyone a liar, but the results simply do not prove this to be true. The Cowboys are infamously wallflowers during free agency. They do not spend money that they “save” in extensions there. Even if we just stick to their in-house operations, did any money saved from the CeeDee Lamb or Dak Prescott negotiations afford some extra room that allowed them to take care of the Micah Parsons situation earlier? Obviously not.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles are as ready as ever.
