The Netflix documentary America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys released today and has given fans an extensive behind-the-scenes look into Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys.
The docuseries consists of eight episodes and features interviews with iconic 1990s Dallas Cowboys players such as Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, and many more.
Jerry Jones himself, of course, is the main focus of the documentary and thus provided a number of eye-opening quotes, including one that explains why he remains as the team’s general manager.
If you ask the average NFL fan or analyst, they’ll likely tell you the biggest issue with the Cowboys is Jones’ vice-grip on the team, particularly as it relates to player personnel in his role as general manager.
The 82-year-old Jones says in the Netflix doc, however, that he doesn’t hire a general manager to run the team because he “likes the pain,” which is otherwise known as masochism — a word used for people who experience joy or pleasure from pain.

Elsewhere in the doc, Jones revealed that the 2023 blowout playoff loss at home to the Green Bay Packers — they lost 48-32 after trailing 48-16 midway through the fourth quarter — “hurt him” more than any other loss he’s experienced as team owner.
