The Dallas Cowboys stunned the NFL world by trading Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers right before beginning the 2025 season. Fortunately for the New England Patriots, talks with an AFC East foe didn’t go anywhere.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones revealed to ESPN New York’s Gary Myers that he approached the New York Jets about Parsons before sending the star edge rusher to Green Bay.

“There was communication — I’m not gonna go in deep enough — with one of these teams,” Jones said in response to Myers asking if the Jets or New York Giants reached out to him. “As it would turn out, I initiated that with one of the teams. You can guess that it was not the Giants.”

Jones added that he had one brief talk with the Jets, who “didn’t have the resources to entertain conversation.” He seemed to confirm Myers’ speculation that his asking price began with All-Pro defensive lineman Quinnen Williams.

“A prerequisite to the entire trade was that we had to have, like now, a really significant, dominant inside defensive player,” Jones said. “Which was our goal to address the run more than we’ve been addressing it the previous four years.”

The Cowboys instead received Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two first-round picks from the Packers. Parsons has quickly made an impact for his new team, collecting four quarterback hits and 1.5 sacks in wins over the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders.

Barring a Super Bowl showdown with Green Bay, New England won’t have to worry about protecting Drake Maye from Parsons this season.
