Jerry Jones, the owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, his son Stephen Jones, the executive vice president, CEO, and director of player personnel of the iconic NFL club, do not seem to agree on what it takes to be a good head coach in the NFL.
In the recently released Netflix docuseries America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys , the duo are discussing their perspectives on what makes a successful head coach in the National Football League and embarassingly weren’t alinged in their assesments.
While Jerry Jones, in typical old-head fashion, doesn’t “believe in the technical X-and-O aspect of” coaching, his son Stephen says that while he used to feel that way, he know thinks that the technical side is actually more important.
“See, I used to believe more it was the charisma. And then now I’m more convince that it is the Xs-and-Os and the technical,” Stephens responded.

The funniest part of the exchange is that they’re both wrong, as an NFL coach usually needs *both* in order to be successful: the technical knowledge to outthink his opponents and the charisma to motivate his own squad. There’s also the fact that they hired Brian Schottenheimer as their next head coach, who hasn’t proven he has either of those two talents across his 20-plus years in the NFL.
America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys has been unsurprisingly been full of painful revelations about the Dallas Cowboys, including Jones’ admission that he does not hire a general manager for the team because he “like the pain.”
Jones and his Dallas Cowboys will begin the 2025 season squarely in the national spotlight as they’ll be traveling up to Philadelphia to take on the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles in the first game on the season on Thursday, September 4.
