Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jermaine Burton was a surprise absentee from Sunday’s practice, and it later turned out to be due to an injury.
However, that didn’t stop some from speculating that Burton may have had another incident of some kind after the rocky rookie season he endured.
Burton has since released a statement on Twitter about his absence and set the record straight.
“Several posts and headlines have circulated regarding my absence from the field yesterday,” Burton wrote. “Unfortunately, some of these reports have omitted important context, leading to false assumptions about my commitment and character. To be clear—my absence was DUE TO INJURY, not for any other reason. Any suggestion otherwise is simply untrue. I take my role with the Bengals and my preparation for this season seriously, and I am focused on recovering and getting back on the field as soon as possible.”
The Bengals announced on Sunday that Burton was day-to-day due to an undisclosed injury. It’s unclear if he’ll be ready to go for the team’s preseason Week 2 game at the Washington Commanders.
