With Derek Carr’s future in New Orleans uncertain, this Senior Bowl standout could make sense as a Day 3 pick.

The New Orleans Saints have a significant decision looming regarding starting QB Derek Carr’s future in the Big Easy. If they choose to move on from the veteran signal-caller, Laurier Golden Hawks QB Taylor Elgersma could make sense as a Day 3 NFL Draft pick.

The 6’6”, 220-pound gunslinger has a cannon for an arm, can extend plays with his legs, and I’d consider his decisiveness above average. Elgersma had a breakout senior season, completing 293 of his 397 pass attempts (73.8%) for 4,252 yards, 35 touchdowns, and just 11 interceptions in 13 games played. He was the winner of the 2024 Hec Crighton Trophy, which is annually awarded to the most remarkable player in U Sports—basically the Canadian Heisman Trophy.

Elgersma finished his four-year stint as a Golden Hawk with a total of 10,230 passing yards, 76 passing touchdowns, 28 interceptions, 572 rushing yards, 18 rushing touchdowns, and a 72% completion percentage.

The Reese’s Senior Bowl standout has participated in three CFL training camps and is currently working with QB Country, the pre-draft trainer for Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix and New England Patriots QB Drake Maye last draft process.

A glimpse of Elgersma putting on a show at the 2024 Senior Bowl:

While I still believe Spencer Rattler deserves a legitimate chance to lead this football team, taking a shot on Elgersma if available on Day 3 could add an exciting quarterback competition to training camp and a shiny new toy for Saints HC Kellen Moore to develop into the player he envisions.

I know some may disagree, but I personally feel Rattler has shown promise not only from a raw talent standpoint but also in terms of leadership and work ethic. His Week 15 performance against the Washington Commanders stands out to me as a clear example of his poise, resilience, and ability to overcome adversity at the next level. Not to mention, he’s been all over the community this offseason making a difference.

What do you think? If the Saints decide it’s time to part ways with Derek Carr, would you roll the dice on the Canadian phenom?
