Jeffrey Lurie is “Not Really Interested” in Buying the Celtics

There was a report a few weeks ago from Bill Simmons, who said on his podcast that Jeffrey Lurie was in the running to buy the Boston Celtics. Lurie was asked about that on Monday night:

“No, I’m not really interested in acquiring another sports team. I think it’s connected because they’re my childhood team. I’ve got a tremendous amount of respect for their whole culture. I sort of see it as like a kindred soul in the NBA. Wyc (Grousbeck) has been an outstanding owner. I love the way they’ve developed that team. And we’ve got to celebrate so many banners over the years. It’s not something that’s top of mind. And my whole focus is on my love of the Eagles and to win another Super Bowl for Philadelphia. And I’m obsessed.”

This is good because it spares us another Josh Harris situation. It’s been hard enough reconciling the fact that the guy who owns the Sixers also owns the Commies, and, to a lesser extent, the Devils. More people should hate the Devils, but apparently Scott Stevens and Marty Brodeur and that stupid neutral zone trap are not top of mind in 2025.

Lurie is generally seen as the best owner in Philadelphia, or tied with John Middleton, because of his commitment to the Eagles and his connection with the fans. He preaches “emotional intelligence” and is a thoughtful individual. He is also a native Bostonian and bought the Birds after he was unable to buy the Patriots. The reason no one cares about that is because he put roots down here and has dedicated everything to the franchise and the city.
