Washington Huskies head ball coach Jedd Fisch was on Rich Eisen’s show this week. He used to be Howie Roseman’s fraternity brother and roommate in college, and he has told a version of this story before, but if you’ve never heard it, it’s great:
“My favorite story is it’s the day of the NFL Draft in 1996 or 1997 I think it was, we’re living in an apartment together and we’re fraternity brothers also. He comes down with a briefcase full of items for the draft and he is ready to be the Jets’ General Manager. He was locked into that NFL Draft weekend… the case was all of his information, his draft reports. They ended up taking Kyle Brady… my TV took it on the chin for that one. He was not very happy with that draft pick.”
So it was actually the 1995 draft. The Jets took Brady out of Penn State with the #9 overall pick. The way Fisch tells the story, Howie was one of the MANY Jets fans who really wanted Warren Sapp at #9, who went #12 to the Bucs instead and went on to become a Hall of Famer. The other top guys to come out of that draft were Tony Boselli, Steve McNair, Ty Law, Derrick Brooks, Curtis Martin, and Terrell Davis. Funny enough, the Jets did get Hugh Douglas later in the first round, and Hugh went on to win DROY with a ton of sacks that season. Brady had a long NFL career and was solid enough, but never reached that next level, so to speak.
The Jets finished 1-15 in 1996 and fired Richie Kotite. They went 9-7 the following year then Bill Parcells got them to 12-4 and the postseason the following year, when they lost the AFC Championship Game to John Elway’s Denver Broncos.
