Some football fans have wondered about James Brown’s future at CBS Sports, given his age (74) and the recent changes on “The NFL Today.”

James Brown has hosted “The NFL Today” since 2006, returning to the network after an 11-year tenure with Fox Sports. But amid retirement rumors, the 74-year-old reportedly has no plans to call it quits.

According to a report from Michael McCarthy and Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports, Brown and CBS Sports are discussing a contract extension. His current deal expires after the 2025 NFL season:

“The the three-time Emmy winner’s current two-year contract with CBS expires after the upcoming season. Negotiations have started, but no deal has been finalized. Still, the 74-year-old Brown has no plans to retire—and wants to continue at NFL Today, say sources.”

The report from McCarthy and Glasspiegel notes that Brown’s strong reputation may allow him to decide on his retirement, citing the examples of Lee Corso and Dick Vitale. If Brown walks away, “The NFL Today” colleague Nate Burleson would be in a favorable spot to replace him, the report noted.

“The NFL Today” saw two notable departures after the 2023 season, with former quarterbacks Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason leaving the network. Former Atlanta Falcons star quarterback Matt Ryan was added to the CBS NFL team, one year after Houston Texans legend JJ Watt joined the network.

Hall of Fame head coach Bill Cowher signed a new deal with CBS to continue coverage for the 2025 season, though it’s unclear if he’d like to stick around long-term like James Brown.

James Brown Has Hosted 10 Super Bowl Pre-Game Shows

During his illustrious run broadcasting career, Brown has had the honors of hosting 10 Super Bowl pre-game shows (four for FOX and six for CBS). Assuming he signs a long-term deal, that number will grow to 11 when CBS airs Super Bowl 62 in Feb. 2028.
