Ian Rapoport of NFL Network revealed Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase’s argument against his one-game suspension for spitting on Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Jalen Ramsey in Sunday’s game. Let’s just say it’s quite absurd.

“His argument essentially being, as far as I understand, if he was going to spit on Jalen Ramsey, he wouldn’t spit on his face rather than on the floor or on his jersey,” Rapoport said.

Following Sunday’s game against the Bengals, Ramsey told reporters Chase spat on him–leading to a fight on the field. Chase denied this, but the NFL has suspended him one game following a video review of the incident.

During a timeout, the video showed Chase spit at Ramsey, prompting a retaliatory punch from the wide receiver. Ramsey was then ejected from the game.

“He spit on me, so it’s up. I don’t give a fuck about football after that — respectfully,” Ramsey told reporters after the game.

“I’m always gonna be all for trash-talking, shit-talking, stuff like that. I actually enjoy that part of the game. I think people know that. And that’s what we (were) doing. I mean, after the first one — the first little thing — the play before, he tried to, like, crack block me or whatever. I got up off that and then we got up talking shit or whatever and he snatched my mouthpiece off my facemask, and that’s when I pushed his facemask.”

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor is disappointed in Chase for the incident on Sunday, but he made it clear that the moment doesn’t define who he is.

“I’ve always thought it was unbelievable how he’s handled himself in some really high-pressure, emotional decisions,” Taylor said in a press conference. “Obviously what happened is crossing the line. We can’t have that. And I know he’ll own up to that.”

Taylor said that “one mistake doesn’t disregard” everything that Chase has done.
