Ja’Marr Chase could soon receive a suspension from the NFL. The wideout was involved in an altercation with Jalen Ramsey during a game between the Bengals and Steelers.

Ramsey alleged that Chase spit on him, leading the defensive back to throw a punch. Ramsey was disqualified from the game.

Ja’Marr Chase “didn’t spit on nobody.”

That’s his story and he’s sticking to it. “I ain’t never opened my mouth to that guy,” he said after the game. “We (were) going back and forth the whole time. So, I’m sure something got under his skin.”

Video appeared to show otherwise.

Ramsey responded by throwing a punch at the wide receiver. The jab sparked a brief scuffle before Ramsey was escorted off the field.

The officiating crew did not see Chase’s instigation. They only reacted to Ramsey’s response. He was forced to leave the game. The Steelers also landed a 15-yard penalty to add injury to insult.

After the contest, which Pittsburgh won, Ramsey made the accusation.

“He spit on me,” the defender said in a postgame interview. “I don’t give a f— about football after that.”

It was a frustrating day for Ja’Marr Chase, who hauled in three of his 10 targets for 30 yards. Emotions took over. It was the second incident involving the duo in the game.

What will be the punishment?

The NFL has set previous precedent with Jalen Carter of the Philadelphia Eagles. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network says a one-game ban could be in store.

So, going back to the Jalen Carter situation, the NFL has made it clear spitting on an opponent is now on the level of a suspension. Carter served his Week 1 because he was ejected before the first snap. Today’s was deep into the fourth quarter.

Carter was ejected from a game against Dallas after spitting on quarterback Dak Prescott. That incident occurred before kickoff. He was essentially dealt a one-game penalty while also being fined a game check ($57k).

Garafolo believes the same could be in store for Ja’Marr Chase. The wideout’s altercation occurred much later in the game. The Bengals might be without their best pass catcher when they face the Patriots.
