Jalen Hurts Dropping Danish Philosophy Lines at the Press Conference
Crossing Broad Crossing Broad

Jalen Hurts dropped another line on Thursday:

This line is attributed to the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. Not exactly a corner of the liberal arts that the average sports fan has explored.

According to Jack Maden at Philosophy Break, it’s sourced to a journal entry and is actually a shortened version of a passage that reads like this:

“It is really true what philosophy tells us, that life must be understood backwards. But with this, one forgets the second proposition, that it must be lived forwards. A proposition which, the more it is subjected to careful thought, the more it ends up concluding precisely that life at any given moment cannot really ever be fully understood; exactly because there is no single moment where time stops completely in order for me to take position [to do this]: going backwards.”

The gist is that the present is a fluid thought and we’re never really afforded the time to stop, think, and reflect. In essence, you learn from your lived experiences in the past while consistently moving forward in time. You can’t really understand something until you’ve done it. Case in point – being a parent. You think you have an idea of what you’re getting yourself into, then BLAM! Reality hits you like a mack truck.

In the context of a football bye week, Hurts went on to say that:

“…you reflect on these things after it happens, and that’s one thing I’ve never thought about, but it’s just a testimony to the singular focus going in every game, I kind of relate it to the changes, and the continuity or lack thereof at certain times, where you’re going through these things, and it just seems like the bye week is a time where we can take a break and decompress a bit and come together and say ‘okay what do we want to do and how do we want to do it?’ This bye week came in the middle of the year and we’ll see what that does for us, but we just want to find ways to win.”

Regardless, it’s another Jalen-ism. Another banger. Let’s make sure we add it to hardcore album:
