It’s been a month since it was reported that Jakobi Myers, the Las Vegas Raiders’ No. 1 wide receiver, wanted to be traded because the Raiders were unwilling to give him a contract extension.
Just before the season began, Meyers publicly said he wanted to be traded but if not, he would go out and do his job even if the Raiders didn’t give him a new deal as free agency looms after the season.
That is exactly what Meyers, who is in the final of a three-year, $33 million contract, has done so far.
Meyers has continued to play hard and deliver despite his unhappiness. He has 17 catches for 228 yards for the 1-2 Raiders. He has played 93.5 percent of the offensive snaps.
When Meyers became the Raiders’ No. 1 wide receiver when the Davante Adams saga began last season his first three games production line was: 17 receptions for 173 yards and one touchdown.
So, Meyers’ production is not dipping despite his unhappiness.
At this point, it is fair to question if the Raiders have any interest in extending Meyers’ deal. They’ve had plenty of time and have addressed the contracts of multiple players. It seems like they may be ready to play out the season, especially with second-round pick Jack Bech being selected to assume a Meyers-like role in the future
If the Raiders, who have been beaten by double-digits in the past two games, see their season get out of hand early, perhaps the team will look to trade him before the November 4 deadline. There would likely be multiple teams interested in Meyers for the stretch run and perhaps the Raiders could garner a mid-round pick.
For now, everything remains the same and Meyers deserves kudos for the way he’s conducted himself during this unsettled time.
