The Philadelphia Eagles traded for Jaire Alexander to help solve their issues at the cornerback position. Now, it seems like that won’t be the case at all.
Just days after arriving in the City of Brotherly Love and before he even got to play for his new team, the former Green Bay Packers star made a big decision. Per NFL insider Jay Glazer, he’s stepping away from the game:
“Former Pro Bowl CB Jaire Alexander has decided to step away from football to try to focus on getting himself right physically and mentally before deciding on his future. Alexander informed the Eagles of his decision today [NFL on FOX] has learned,” Glazer posted on X.

Not so long ago, the former Louisville Cardinals star was one of the best defensive backs in all of football. As a former first-round pick, he was one of the highest-paid defensive players in the game.
Then, injuries derailed his career. Once a two-time second-team All-Pro, Alexander could barely stay on the field, and things weren’t much better off the gridiron, either.
He constantly crashed out and didn’t see eye to eye with the Packers organization. Ultimately, the team chose that he wasn’t worth the trouble and the money, and they cut ties with him.
Alexander joined the Baltimore Ravens in free agency this season, but he failed to make much of an impact. Now, he might not play another snap in the league.
While this is a sad ending for someone who used to be arguably a top-three player in the position, it’s nice to know that he’s taking steps towards getting better. Mental health is as important as his physical well-being, and he seems to be struggling with both.
Hopefully, he’ll find his way back to the field one day. And even if that’s not the case, the fans can only hope that he gets well.
