From one former 49ers front office member to potentially another?
The Jacksonville Jaguars parted ways with a former San Francisco 49ers general manager to land their head coach. Now that Trent Baalke is out, the Jaguars are still in search of a general manager.
Liam Coen came over from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the Jags won’t have another Bucs front office member.
On Tuesday afternoon, Tampa Bay’s assistant general manager, Mike Greenberg, withdrew his name from consideration for Jacksonville’s general manager position. Greenberg has been with Tampa Bay for over 15 years, so it makes sense why he was unwilling to part ways with an organization that has made questionable decisions at best.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Jacksonville requested to interview Josh Williams, the 49ers director of Scouting and Football Operations, for the same job Greenberg turned down.
Williams has climbed the front office ladder for the 49ers during his 14 seasons with the organization. He’s worn several hats, from national scout to area scout. According to the team’s website, Williams’s current role has him focusing on pro and college scouting, as well as player development, with an assist in contract negotiations. That sounds like somebody who is preparing for a general manager role.
