Anthony Campanile is starting to fill out his staff
Former Green Bay Packers linebackers coach and run game coordinator Anthony Campanile was hired to be the new defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. On Monday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Packers would be losing another coach to the Jaguars: Anthony Perkins, Jacksonville’s new secondary coach.
The grandson of three-time All-Pro running back Ron Perkins, Perkins began coaching full-time at the college level after having a cup of coffee in the NFL as a player. In 2023, he served as Oregon State’s co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach before joining the Packers as a defensive quality control coach.
Since coming to Green Bay, the Packers have added several former Oregon State defensive backs, including draft pick safety Kitan Oladapo and reserve/futures signings Isaiah Dunn and Kaleb Hayes.
Even without Perkins, the Packers retained their two most important secondary coaches this offseason: Derrick Ansley and Ryan Downard. Ansley is the team’s passing game coordinator, hired after a year as the Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator. He has been interviewed for defensive coordinator positions over the last three offseasons. Downard is the Packers’ defensive backs coach, a role he’s held since 2023. Prior to that, he served as assistant defensive backs coach and safeties coach from 2019 to 2022.
Green Bay has only one on-field vacancy left this offseason: the linebackers coach. The team has yet to announce its replacement for Campanile. Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel previously reported that Sean Duggan, a Packers defensive assistant, is the favorite to replace Campanile.
