We hardly knew ye
The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired former Green Bay Packers linebacker coach Anthony Campanile to be their next defensive coordinator. Campanile came on with the Packers in 2024, joining the team with the title of linebackers coach and defensive run game coordinator. Under his watch, former first-rounder Quay Walker evolved into a more consistent player during the second half of their season, and rookie Edgerrin Cooper was an all-rookie team-caliber player.
Campanile, who came to Green Bay by way of the Miami Dolphins — a team that parted ways with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio after their 2023 season, was always going to be a short-term answer for the Packers. Even last year, Campanile drew interest in the defensive coordinator market. It was only a matter of time before someone poached him.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein, Campanile was previously offered Penn State’s defensive coordinator position and would have been awarded the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator job, had it not gone to former Packers analyst Robert Saleh. Silverstein also noted that the “leading candidate to replace” Campanile is currently Sean Duggan, who is currently serving as a defensive assistant for Green Bay.
Duggan was a graduate assistant under Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley in 2019, sliding into linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator roles under Hafley once he left Ohio State for Boston College. Duggan was one of a few coaches who moved with Hafley from Boston College to Green Bay in 2024.
Between the hirings of quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion and defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington, this leaves just the linebackers coach role open for the Packers in the 2025 offseason. The question now is whether offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich will be leaving for a play-calling opportunity or if Luke Getsy will remain as a “senior offensive assistant.”
