Think back to the middle of the 2023 season. The Jacksonville Jaguars were sitting pretty. They were 8-3 with a huge lead in the AFC South a year after winning a playoff game, and looked to be on track to be a contender for years to come.
Since then, everything has gone wrong, as they’re just 5-19 since that point. And, their coaching search has gone horribly wrong, resulting in the firing of general manager Trent Baalke on Wednesday.
Doug Pederson was fired after the season, and on paper, the Jaguars should’ve had one of the most desired head coaching openings. They have an established quarterback, a young star receiver in Brian Thomas Jr., and a pair of solid players on the defensive front in Travon Walker and Josh Hines-Allen.
But, the team didn’t land their rumored top target, Ben Johnson, as he went to the Bears. They then zeroed in on Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, but he too passed up the job on Wednesday.
The talk around the league is that both Johnson, who was Detroit’s offensive coordinator, and Coen passed on the job because they didn’t want to work with Baalke, who was surprisingly brought back as general manager.
The Jaguars should’ve fired Baalke after the season and hired a general manager and head coach together, which is what competent franchises try to do. Instead, they struck out with their top two candidates, and it became clear that they had to fire Baalke on Wednesday, which they did.
That’s the right choice, in the end. But, it’s far too late, as the damage has already been done. Owner Shahid Khan screwed up by sticking by Baalke after the season. That’s just another mistake in a long line of them by Khan.
The Jaguars, who have been losing for years now, are once again in disarray.
