The Jacksonville Jaguars locked up Trevor Lawrence to a deal last offseason that had them completely committed to him as a franchise quarterback. But, a down year that ended with an injury for Lawrence and a regime change in Jackonsville led to some speculation that he could possibly be on the move for a huge package of picks this offseason to a quarterback needy team like Pittsburgh.
Recently, Trevor Lawrence completely shut down those rumors. The 26-year-old will not be heading to Pittsburgh this offseason.
Lawrence was considered a future number-one overall pick since high school when he was the nation’s top-overall prospect, and nothing he did in three years at Clemson changed that. After a disastrous rookie season with Urban Meyer as his head coach, Lawrence played much better in 2022, winning a playoff game, and in the first half of 2023. But, things took a turn for the worse in the second half of last season, and weren’t much better this year. Lawrence was average-at-best this year, as he threw for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in ten games before suffering a scary head injury. His passer rating of 85.2 was pretty mediocre. When you balance that against his five-year, $275 million contract with $200 million guaranteed, that’s a subpar performance.
Fringe rumors last week suggested that the Steelers and Jaguars had discussed a potential trade that would send Lawrence to the quarterback-needy Steelers. The rumors were quickly shot down by top journalists. On Monday, Lawrence refuted those rumors himself. Here’s Pro Football Talk with more.
Last week, a rumor popped up that Pittsburgh had inquired about potentially trading for Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence.
Both teams effectively shot that down through the media. But even if they hadn’t, Lawrence himself made it clear in a Monday interview with Kay Adams that he’s not interested in departing the Jaguars.
“That’s funny, I didn’t really see anything,” Lawrence said. “My agent texted me and was like, ‘Hey this is a…’ — and then of course I saw it after he texted me and said, ‘Hey this is a report that’s out there. I don’t think there’s anything to it, but I’ll check into it.’ But I saw it, and it’s funny though, when he sent it to me, I wouldn’t say your heart drops, but you’re kind of like, ‘What?’
“And then I’m thinking about it, I have a no-trade clause in my contract, so I would know about it if I was getting traded or if that was something that was going to happen. I’d have to be on board with it — which I’m not. I’m happy here in Jacksonville. I plan on — we want to win a Super Bowl here, and I think we can do that. And I don’t want to leave Jacksonville. So, I’m happy here, obviously. I’m not going to Pittsburgh.”
It sounds like new head coach Liam Coen will indeed get to work...
