Veteran safety has been unremarkable since arriving in Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Rams have had some notable free agent misses over the last few seasons. It would appear that safety Kamren Curl will be the next player added to the list of whiffs made by the Rams’ front office following an unremarkable first season in Hollywood. L.A. should do the right thing and admit its mistake by cutting bait with the veteran.
The Rams signed Curl away from Washington in March 2024, and in return, he posted a career-low 79 combined tackles in 16 starts. While Curl allowed just a 55.6 completion percentage in pass coverage, he also gave up 14.8 yards per completion and 4 touchdowns.
Most alarming is that the Arkansas product has allowed an average 112.4 passer rating in coverage since 2022. Any player giving up at least a 108 passer rating in three straight seasons is cause for concern.
That is not a player worth keeping, even if a team is thin in the secondary, which the Rams unfortunately are.
Luckily for L.A., it didn’t pony up much money to sign him, as Curl signed a two-year deal worth $9 million. At the time, the move was viewed as a steal, and perhaps it could have been had Curl recaptured his past form.
Even though things with Curl don’t look very promising, there’s always a slim chance he could bounce back.
This offseason, Curl has spent time working out with Patriots’ receiver Stefon Diggs—avoid the boat trips and pink stuff, Kam!—to improve his coverage skills. According to Rams.com staff writer Wyatt Miller, one of Curl’s goals for the 2025 season is to get his hands on the ball more. The safety has 3 interceptions in his five-year career, and they all came during his rookie season.
Despite that, Curl should be on the trade block. L.A. would be wise to hang onto him for now, since teams will likely become desperate for safety help over the summer as injuries arise. Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport said the Rams should consider trading Curl, but the ideal way of replacing him would depend on the team trading for Jalen Ramsey:
“It’s not outside the realm of reason that a team with a need at safety could talk themselves into Curl recapturing his 2023 form, and it wouldn’t be that hard for Los Angeles to replace Curl.
They could just flip Quentin Lake back to safety and play [Jalen Ramsey] in the slot.”
Lake is also not much better in coverage than Curl, having also given up 4 touchdowns in 2024. The Rams will probably keep Curl on the roster this season because, underwhelming player or not, their secondary cannot afford to lose many bodies. Time will tell if Curl’s work this offseason will pay off in a rebound campaign.
