Ex-49ers cornerback Ambry Thomas failed his Colts physical on Thursday and won’t be joining Indianapolis.
It turns out that recently claimed former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Ambry Thomas won’t be joining the Indianapolis Colts roster after all this late season—as the 4th-year veteran failed his physical on Thursday (via ESPN’s Adam Schefter):
The 2021 3rd round pick of the 49ers had spent the 2024 season to-date on injured reserve before being waived by San Francisco from the injured reserve list on Tuesday.
However, the Colts medical staff apparently didn’t feel comfortable enough with the status of his apparently still healing forearm to medically clear him for an addition.
The 6’0,” 190 pound cornerback (with 32 1/4” arms) has 79 tackles (61 solo), a tackle for loss, 2 interceptions, 12 passes defensed, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery during 42 career games (11 starts).
The Colts ‘struck a little gold’ with another former 49ers cornerback, Samuel Womack III, to begin the 2024 campaign, who’s made 8 starts this season and really solidified the other outside starting spot opposite Jaylon Jones.
However, lightning in a bottle will apparently not strike with the claiming of this latest 49ers cornerback castoff, as Thomas won’t be joining the Colts anytime soon it appears.
It’s a bit of an unfortunate break because Thomas did appear to have some talent and was a bit intriguing as a cornerback addition a little lower on the Indy depth chart—especially with the Colts’ remaining playoff hopes realistically very unfavorable right now.
