Speaking of water, I was reminded of one of the greatest, most profound graduation speeches I have ever heard. It was delivered by author/philosopher David Foster Wallace to the 2005 graduates at Kenyon College. It is called: “This is Water.”
From 2005 until I retired from teaching in 2018, I shared this speech with every student I had the privilege to walk a stretch of the yellow brick road with. Here is a salient 9-minute clip narrated by David Foster Wallace (from the tape of his speech) that, if you have the time to watch and listen, may resonate with you the way it has every day since I watched and heard this.
“It is about the real value of a real education, which has almost nothing to do with knowledge, and everything to do with simple awareness; awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, all the time, that we have to keep reminding ourselves over and over:
