Player Overview

Nic Scourton (formerly known as Nic Caraway) was a highly sought after four-star prospect from Bryan High School (TX). He initially committed to Purdue University. Scourton broke out his sophomore season with a 10 sack, 15 TFL (tackles for loss) performance that garnered second-team conference honors. Transferring to Texas A&M for this junior season, Scourton slimmed down and played primarily at defensive end. While his sack total was halved, he was still impactful with 14 TFLs. Scourton declared for the NFL draft afterwards.

Nic Scourton is a well-rounded defensive end with the tools and upside to be a good starter. He is able to be a contributor in both pass and run plays. He has good strength and an assortment of moves to keep tackles off balance. Because of his skills, Scourton attracted chips and double teams, the latter he had trouble beating. Scourton can also improve his run processing and hip tightness as he does have below-average bend. His acceleration needs work as well.

Weaknesses aside, Nic Scourton projects to be one of the top edge defenders in a strong class and an immediate contributor. With his weight slimmed down to the 260 pound range, Scourton fits in as primary defensive end on a 4-3 formation or outside linebacker in a 3-4 alignment. He is projected to be drafted in the late first to second round.

How Will He Fit On The Team

Washington addressed the defensive line by only giving one player, DT Javon Kinlaw, a multi-year deal. In addition to letting team leader in sacks Dante Fowler walk in free agency, the Commanders set themselves up to use one of their top selections to address the defensive end position.
