The Pittsburgh Steelers have showered a few young players with new deals this season, but as training camp at St. Vincent College looms later this month, Joey Porter Jr. is still waiting for his.
Porter said earlier this offseason that he feels like he’s been an elite player since the Steelers drafted him out of Penn State in 2023. He obviously wants to be paid as such.
“I’m happy that I’m getting the respect that I feel like I’m owed,” Porter said.
Former Cincinnati Bengals receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh tried to dive into Porter’s headspace recently.
“We know when guys want this money and you don’t give it to them: One, we gonna play? Two, I’m gonna be mad,” Houshmandzadeh said Tuesday on “Speakeasy.” “The thing is the Steelers have always paid their guys on defense. That’s what they do, so he’s (like), ‘We (haven’t I) been paid? Y’all went on a spree this offseason. You paid Darnell Washington. … You paid (Nick Herbig), and he’s not even a starter. And I’m starting and I can’t get paid?'”
Former Steelers defensive back and likely future Pro Football Hall of Famer Patrick Peterson recently chimed in on Porter’s wait, as well. Peterson isn’t sure if Pittsburgh will end up shelling out for the long-limbed coverman.
“But I believe Joey is definitely well-deserving of a contract extension,” Peterson recently told D.J. Siddiqi of Online Casino Canada. “He’s a stud. He’s a guy who absolutely erases teams’ No. 1 receivers. I had the opportunity to be with him his rookie year, and it was quite impressive to see what he was able to do throughout that year.
