Drake Maye is only in his second season with the New England Patriots, but he’s already doing things only Tom Brady has ever done.
Year is off to an incredible start for Maye, who’s quickly establishing himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. After struggling a bit during the Patriots’ season opener against Brady’s Las Vegas Raiders, Maye has been phenomenal over the last month.
Over his last four games, Maye has completed just under 78 percent of his pass attempts with six passing touchdowns and one interception. He’s also rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, helping New England win three of those four games.
It’s been a historic stretch for the 23-year-old, who joined Brady as the only quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 200 yards, complete at least 70 percent of his passes and top the century mark in passer rating in four consecutive games.
In fact, Maye’s career is off to a very similar start to Brady’s statistically, which bodes well for the young QB.
Maye has a long way to go if he wants to catch Brady in anything, but his career is off to a very encouraging start. He’s managed to overcome numerous obstacles early on, including a weak offensive line, poor weapons and an inexperienced coaching staff during his rookie year.
Brady only got better with age, and the same could happen with Maye. He’s much more physically gifted than Brady was in terms of speed and arm strength, giving him a Josh Allen-type ceiling. If he keeps improving with experience and continues on his upward trajectory, the sky’s the limit for the former first-round draft pick.
Replacing Brady was always going to be impossible for the Patriots, but it seems like they have their next franchise quarterback.
