Is Cam Heyward being unfair for wanting more money?
Behind the Steel Curtain Behind the Steel Curtain

This is weird territory, personally speaking. 99.9 percent of the time, I’m all for players getting their money. Millionaires before billionaires and all of that. This particular case, though, with Cam Heyward wanting a new contract just over a year after he got a new one annoys me.

If you recall, last offseason Heyward was entering the final year of his deal. In the middle of the offseason, though, the two sides agreed on a two-year extension that would pay him just under $30 million over the duration of the deal. The 36 year-old then put together an All-Pro season – perhaps the best overall season of his career – and is now asking for more money, holding in at training camp and not practicing on Thursday.

On one hand, I get it. He out-performed the deal he signed, and he’s not even one of the top 20 highest-paid defensive tackles. On the other hand, Heyward is 36 and signed a deal just over a year ago. If he didn’t like the money on the deal, he didn’t have to sign it. This is likely his final contract, and he’s made over $130 million in his career – why is money once again an issue with him?

Now, as Nick Farabaugh points out, the most likely outcome is the Steelers give Heyward a slight pay bump similar to how they did it with Jalen Ramsey.

If that’s what happens, then great. This all gets forgotten in a week and we move on. For the time being, though, it’s quite annoying to have to talk about Heyward once again demanding more money.
