The Green Bay Packers have made it a point this offseason to secure their core on offense for the foreseeable future. The Packers have already spent big at wide receiver this offseason, signing both Jayden Reed and Christian Watson to lucrative contract extensions.
Next up is seemingly Tucker Kraft, who may be the best pass-catcher of the bunch. While the raw value of a Kraft extension likely won’t reach what Watson got as a wide receiver, there’s no question that he is one of the most important pieces of the Green Bay offense.
However, Kraft is coming off of a torn ACL that he suffered midway through the 2025 season. That injury has complicated contract talks even with the South Dakota State product slated to be ready to go by Week 1.
While Green Bay has good reason to pause on an extension with Kraft coming off of such a serious injury, Packers reporter Rob Demovsky warned them about waiting too long to sign their star tight end.
“The Packers could wait until Kraft is back on the field before doing an extension, but that also could become more costly if he picks up where he left off,” Demovsky wrote. “Either way, a deal appears likely given that both sides have stated their desire to go forward together. It would not be a surprise if a lucrative extension is reached before the season.”
Kraft was already trending toward becoming one of the best tight ends in all of football last season before the injury, and he seems poised to return to that form if he is able to start the season healthy this fall. He is an elite receiver who is lethal after the catch and is also a quality blocker, making him a key piece of the Packers’ offense.
If he continues to play this way in 2026 and can prove that the injury worries are firmly behind him, he will be back at the negotiating table asking for an extension near the top of the tight end market. By holding off on a deal now, the Packers are giving him a chance to run up the bill.
