Mike Tomlin doesn’t seem intent on strolling the sidelines for another NFL team next season. The now-former Pittsburgh Steelers coach wants to spend time with his family after having stepped down from his longtime post last Tuesday.
NFL insider Jason La Canfora believes the Buffalo Bills should try to change his mind.
“If I’m Terry Pegula I am at least showing up with a Brinks Truck in Mike Tomlin’s driveway and making him say no,” La Canfora wrote Monday on X. “He chased Bill Cowher for years back in the day. There are plenty of innovative OC candidates out there who could be paired with him.”
Worth noting, the Steelers still own Tomlin’s rights, which would mean the Bills would have to trade for him.
According to betonline.ag, Tomlin has the second-highest odds (+350) to succeed former William & Mary teammate Sean McDermott, who the Bills fired on Monday morning. Buffalo lost heartbreakingly in overtime against the Denver Broncos in a divisional-round playoff on Saturday.
The same sportsbook pegs former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as the favorite to get the Bills’ job (+300).
Tomlin spent 19 years as the Steelers’ head coach, compiling a 193-114-2 record in the regular season, tying the legendary Chuck Noll for the most wins in the franchise’s history. Tomlin won five of his first six postseason matchups while in charge in Pittsburgh — including Super Bowl XLIII — but went 3-11 the rest of the way.
With the Bills, McDermott went 98-50 in the regular season. Buffalo decided to go in a different direction while Josh Allen is still in his prime.
