San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s future with the franchise has become increasingly uncertain, and one team insider believes his NFL career could be nearing an end.
Following Aiyuk’s latest public comments about the organization, The SF Standard’s David Lombardi suggested on his X account that the veteran receiver may never play again.
“Has been apparent for months now that Brandon Aiyuk’s career might be over, especially if his actual actions are observed instead of his words. Have to wonder if it’d even make financial sense for Aiyuk to play more if the 49ers do successfully win right to recoup money. Because the easiest way for the team to collect that money would be through offset of any future earnings — i.e. Aiyuk’s pay would go to the 49ers in that scenario.”
Lombardi’s comments come shortly after Aiyuk publicly criticized the 49ers in a video posted to his YouTube channel, saying his relationship with the organization has been permanently damaged. Among other allegations, Aiyuk claimed a team executive unexpectedly came to his home following a disagreement involving a coach and made it clear he no longer wants to be part of the franchise.
“The story is I don’t [expletive] with them [expletive] and I never will,” Aiyuk said. “But, I forgive [people], you feel me? I’m trying to get better. I’m trying to grow. I’m trying to heal. So, I ain’t finna hold it against [them], but we is not cool. We won’t be cool and I will never be stepping in that building except for on October 19th when I come through with that [expletive] belt.”
The relationship between Aiyuk and the 49ers deteriorated after the team voided the remaining guaranteed money on his contract, citing his failure to participate in team-directed rehabilitation following ACL, MCL and meniscus injuries suffered during the 2024 season. He was later placed on the reserve/left squad list after he stopped reporting to the team.
Aiyuk has also publicly expressed a desire to join the Washington Commanders, though he remains under contract with San Francisco as the standoff continues.
