The Pittsburgh Steelers’ options at wide receiver are running out.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still in need of another wide receiver since trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys this offseason, and that’s even more true now that Calvin Austin III will be sidelined for at least several games. However, yet another potential option seems to have just been ruled out.

ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler doesn’t think Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs, who has been linked to the Steelers, is getting traded anytime soon.

“Romeo Doubs has emerged as the Packers’ No. 1 receiving option in a contract year. The trade rumors surrounding Doubs, who has four touchdowns through four games, never made much sense,” Fowler wrote. “That conversation was understandable last season, when the team suspended Doubs for one game for missing practices for personal reasons. But the Packers have shown no interest in trading him, and my sense is they have more interest in potentially extending him.”

Doubs, 25, was originally linked to Pittsburgh after the Packers selected two wide receivers (Matthew Golden and Savion Williams) with their first- and third-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. Green Bay also had wide receivers Jayden Reed, Christian Watson and Dontayvion Wicks, among others, in the crowded room.

However, several of the Packers playmakers have since gone down with injuries, opening up a much larger role for Doubs to start the year, and it’s safe to say he’s taken full advantage of the opportunity.

Through the first four games of the season, Doubs has recorded 13 catches for 179 yards and four touchdowns, which is the total number of times he found the end zone last season.

Only time will tell if Doubs can keep up his increase in production, but if he does, it seems likely that he’ll be in Green Bay for many years to come.

“The sides have had cursory talks, keeping in contact about the future. Doubs staying in Green Bay beyond 2025 is at least a possibility,” Fowler added. “Doubs is building a case as the No. 1 free agent option. Mike Evans, Jakobi Meyers and Jauan Jennings are in the class but aren’t entering their second contract like Doubs, who is 25. Youth always pays.”

It’s not the news Steelers fans were hoping to hear, but it might be time for the team to look elsewhere in its search for another playmaker before the NFL trade deadline arrives.

A fourth-round pick in 2022, Doubs has recorded 160 receptions for 1,879 yards and 19 touchdowns in his professional career.
