ESPN’s Mina Kimes said on Tuesday that the New England Patriots’ pass defense could be an issue as the team makes a possible push toward another Super Bowl appearance.
Patriots insider Chad Graff of The Athletic identified “five potential red flags” for New England on Friday, ahead of the playoffs this winter, including the group’s offensive-line depth.
Graff noted that while he doesn’t see it as a problem yet, it could become a concern eventually.
“The turnaround by the Patriots offensive line is one of the most remarkable aspects of this incredible season. The unit has gone from the league’s worst to a borderline top-10 group. A big reason for that is the consistency up front and the lack of injuries,” the senior writer said. “However, injuries are also bound to happen, especially at what is arguably the most physical position on the field. And the Patriots, at least on paper, don’t have great depth up front. So while this isn’t a reason for concern yet, it could become one down the road.”
Aside from re-hiring Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator and signing four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs, one of the biggest moves the Patriots made for their offense over the offseason was drafting Will Campbell out of LSU with the fourth overall pick.
Campbell and company had some trouble in the first half of the season protecting quarterback Drake Maye, but over the last two games, the unit has allowed the MVP candidate to only be sacked twice.
Mike Vrabel’s group will seek their ninth straight win on Sunday when they face the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 12.
