It’s no secret that the Arizona Cardinals have big plans for Marvin Harrison Jr., and maybe this could be a breakout year for him. However, an insider gave two main reasons for Harrison’s struggles in his first two NFL seasons.

One of them was the previous atmosphere, according to Sports Illustrated.

“First, the situation in Arizona the past couple of years wasn’t an ideal one for a young receiver,” Albert Breeer wrote. “They had Kyler Murray’s health situation, a coaching staff hanging by a thread, and a team that was out of contention before Christmas in 2024 and before Thanksgiving in 2025.”

“Second, and this was pointed out to me by people there, bigger receivers are a little slower to become dominant in the NFL than their smaller, shiftier counterparts. Julio Jones, Larry Fitzgerald, Dez Bryant, and Demaryius Thomas are all examples of bigger wideouts that took a minute to evolve into what they’d become as pros. Harrison conceded to me last summer that there was an adjustment in trying to just go out and play fast and free.”

Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr. could have a big Year 3

It’s not that Harrison has been terrible. It’s just that he hasn’t lived up to big expectations. Harrison has 103 catches for 1,493 yards and 12 touchdowns over his two seasons.

But he was the No. 4 overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The good news is there’s plenty of time for him to cut loose.

“He’s too talented, and too smart, and too driven to give up on this quickly,” Breer said. “I’m excited to see what Mike LaFleur and his staff can do with him.”

The Cardinals’ coaching staff has expressed excitement about what Harrison brings to the field, according to a post on X by PHNX Cardinals.

“Marvin’s a REALLY good player,” offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said. “I didn’t realize he was as big as he was until I got here. He caught an in-breaker early in OTAs. I mean, WOW … that X-button.” Hackett has liked what he’s seen from Marvin Harrison Jr. so far this offseason.”
