The Green Bay Packers shocked many when they signed Christian Watson to a $110.5 million contract extension. However, the Packers expect Watson to remain a crucial part of their offense.
Because of that, the money given might seem a bit jarring. But if everything goes to plan, team reporter Mike Spofford believes it’ll be money well spent.
“He’s not getting paid for what he’s done. He’s getting paid for what the Packers expect him to do,” Spofford wrote. “There’s also ample evidence how different this offense is with him versus without him, due to how defenses react to his presence. That doesn’t show up in his statistics. I believe the only reason he didn’t hit $30M APY is his injury history. Is there risk here? Sure. There’s risk in every big contract in such a violent sport. But right now the Packers have the receiving trio of Watson, Jayden Reed and Matthew Golden locked up for the next 3-4 years. That sounds like a pretty good spot to be in.”
Over his four years in Green Bay, Watson has caught 133 passes for 2,264 yards and 20 touchdowns. There have been flashes of brilliance, like in his rookie season when he set new career-highs across the board with 41 receptions for 611 yards and seven touchdowns. He had another 35 grabs for 611 yards and six touchdowns in 2025.
But injuries have ultimately held Watson back. He hasn’t appeared in more than 15 games in a season and has appeared in 10 or fewer twice. He played in just 10 games during the 2025 season due to recovery from a torn ACL.
Still, the Packers are fully convinced Watson will be a difference maker in their offense. Spofford agrees. Green Bay is looking to get over the playoff hump in 2026. If Jordan Love is connecting with Watson down field, the Packers believe they’ll be successful.
