With the new relationship between Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, fans are wondering if the star will play differently under a new offense. As McDaniel is adding tweaks to Herbert with the Chargers, this NFL insider details the differences and the challenge that the quarterback has this offseason.

Speaking on “NFL Live,” Los Angeles reporter Kris Rhim would reveal that, besides Herbert being asked to now put his left foot forward, the goal is for the quarterback to get the ball out in 2.4 seconds or less. These were the same components as other stops McDaniel had, like when he was the head coach for the Miami Dolphins with Tua Tagovailoa.

“I think the relationship between these two from the start is that McDaniel was challenging Herbert in ways that no other offensive coordinator has in his career, and that starts about changing his footwork, so Herbert is now using his non-football throwing side forward, so that just means that he now has his left foot forward instead of his right foot forward,” Rhim said.

“It’s a style that McDaniel has coached that stops at Washington, Atlanta, and recently in Miami with Tua Tagovailoa,” Rhim continued. “Wouldn’t go into the details because of fear of competitive advantage, but he said that it’ll help the timing of the offense. He wants Herbert throwing the ball in 2.4 seconds or less, so receivers get the ball in space and get yards after catch. So Justin Herbert’s been limited to throwing weekly using this green water ball, which looks some kind of like alien-like at practice, and they’re hoping that this takes Herbert and the offense to a new level.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen if the changes will be fruitful for Herbert.
