Injury updates: Jauan Jennings misses practice for the second day in a row

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy didn’t practice for the second day in a row, as he was listed on the injury report with a left shoulder and toe injury. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Purdy has a turf toe variant:

It’s actually not a turf toe. Turf toe is usually the top and in front. This is the bottom of the foot. I don’t know if people need to know more about the specifics of Brock Purdy’s toe, but there it is.

My understanding is that he’s expected to miss 2-5 weeks, which is a pretty big amount of time. The reality is, it’s swollen. It’s irritated, and it’s really tough to kind of ascertain where it’s at. So, 2-5 weeks is the best estimate, which likely means that Brock Purdy misses the Saints game and the Cardinals game.

Here’s Thursday’s injury report:

Did not participate:
QB Brock Purdy (shoulder/toe)
WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder)
LT Trent Williams (knee/rest)

We can expect to see plenty of rest days for Williams this season. Practice will likely be mental for Trent in 2025. If there’s any cause for concern, it should be directed toward Jennings, who did not practice for the second day in a row after missing time in Week 1 with a shoulder injury. You’d imagine the team gives Jennings all the way up until game time to see if he can play.

Limited:
G Ben Bartch (knee/elbow)
Yetur Gross-Matos (knee)
RB Jordan James (Finger)
WR Jordan Watkins (ankle)

If Jennings is out, getting Watkins back would be a considerable upgrade from Marques Valdes-Scantling and Russell Gage. Those two struggled to get open in Week 1. Watkins worked with Mac Jones enough in August that those two should have chemistry. The same is true for Kendrick Bourne, who played with Jones in New England. So, the trio of Ricky Pearsall, Bourne, and Watkins would put Jones in a far better position to succeed if Watkins can play.

The 49ers also officially announced the addition of Messiah Swinson to the practice squad. He is expected to be elevated to the active roster on Sunday. However, the Niners have yet to add another quarterback.
