PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers had five players not take part in practice on Wednesday, Sept. 17, as they prepare to face the New England Patriots in Week 3.
Joey Porter Jr., DeShon Elliott and Alex Highsmith were all out with injuries, while veterans Darius Slay and T.J. Watt rested. Highsmith has already been ruled out for Week 3.
Elliott, Porter and defensive tackle Derrick Harmon are questionable. Harmon returned to practice for the first time since his preseason knee injury.
Patrick Queen was a full participant coming off an oblique injury. Max Scharping popped up with an unexpected knee injury.
Queen suffered an oblique injury during the Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks. He is considered probable to play in Week 3 and returned to practice in full on Wednesday, Sept. 17.
Slay is dealing with a shoulder injury stemming from the team’s Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks. He did not practice on Wednesday, Sept. 17, but is considered probable to play.
Scharping appeared on the team’s injury report on Wednesday, Sept. 17. He was a limited participant with a knee injury. His status is unknown.
Harmon suffered a knee injury during the Steelers’ preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 21. He was diagnosed with a right MCL sprain. He missed the Steelers’ first and second games of the season.
Harmon returned to practice for the first time on Wednesday, Sept. 17. Head coach Mike Tomlin called him questionable to play in Week 3 against the New England Patriots.
Elliott suffered a knee injury during the Steelers’ Week 1 win over the New York Jets. He did not return to the game and was diagnosed with an MCL sprain. Elliott did not play in Week 2. He is questionable to return in Week 3.
Porter Jr. suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1 against the New York Jets. Tomlin said he was held out as a precaution, but Porter did not practice the following week and missed the team’s Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks. He is questionable to return in Week 3.
Highsmith was limited in practice on Friday, Sept. 12 — the first sign that there was a problem with his left ankle. He tried to play in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, but left the game in the first half and did not return.
Highsmith is expected to avoid injured reserve, but has been ruled out for Week 3.
Trice suffered a hamstring injury during the team’s Friday Night Lights practice at Latrobe Memorial Stadium on Aug. 1. He returned to practice in a limited capacity before being placed on the injured reserve list on Aug. 26. By rule, Trice must spend at least four weeks on the injured...
