Indianapolis Colts running back Salvon Ahmed is out for the entire 2025 season after a hip drop tackle in practice from teammate Trey Washington, and now his NFL dreams might also be in jeopardy.
Ahmed, 26, signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He’s since bounced around the league and was hoping to make the Colts’ roster as a depth option at running back this season.
Sadly, despite an impressive training camp, Ahmed won’t get the chance to impress coaches during the preseason.

He was carted off the field and taken to the hospital last week after an illegal tackle from Washington. Adam Schefter then reported that Ahmed will miss the entire 2025 season with an ankle injury.
“Never want to see that happen,” Colts coach Shane Steichen said, per ESPN’s Stephen Holder. “I know we don’t encourage hip-drop tackles. I know Trey’s down in the dumps, and I don’t think he’s trying to do that. We’re just trying to create an edge. … Those [backups] are going to have to tackle come preseason.”
A hip-drop tackle involves a defensive player who “unweights himself by swiveling and dropping his hips and/or lower body, landing on and trapping the runner’s leg(s) at or below the knee.”
The NFL officially banned the play prior to last season, making it a 15-yard penalty in games. Like the horse collar, a hip-drop tackle can place extreme stress on the ball carrier’s lower extremities, as evidenced by Ahmed’s injury.
Making it in the NFL as an undrafted running back is hard enough as is. Ahmed was on his fourth team in six NFL seasons and was just hoping to cling to a backup role.
Additionally, at 26 years old, he’s already at the point where running backs begin to show decline. Years 2-6 are considered peak years for the position, and now Ahmed will need to come back in year seven, coming off of a significant injury, and try to make a team yet again.
It’s certainly possible. But it won’t be easy. Sadly, he’s now facing an uphill battle after an easily avoided injury due to a teammate.
