The Philadelphia Eagles absolutely obliterated Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. Sure, the final score read 40-22. But the game was nowhere near that close. Philly led 40-6 at one point and while Mahomes finished with 257 yards and three touchdowns, the majority of those numbers came with the game long decided.
In fact, Mahomes, who is generally considered the league’s best quarterback, was downright atrocious prior to garbage time. The three-time Super Bowl winner averaged -1.36 expected points added per dropback in that first half. That’s the 10th-worst mark for any quarterback in a first half for any game since 2018.
So, how did they do it? By sitting back in coverage.
ESPN Research: The Eagles blitzed Patrick Mahomes on zero of his 42 dropbacks.
Mahomes is the 6th QB in Super Bowl history to not be blitzed a single time. All six QBs lost.

ESPN’s Seth Walder revealed that the Eagles did not blitz Mahomes on any of his 42 dropbacks. That’s just the sixth time in Super Bowl history that a quarterback has never faced a blitz. All six times that quarterback has lost the game.
But that doesn’t mean that Philadelphia didn’t get pressure. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. Despite only rushing four, Philadelphia and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio had a jaw-dropping 38 percent pressure rate. Through 2.5 quarters, the Eagles were getting pressure on more than 50 percent of Kansas City’s offensive snaps.
And it clearly had an affect on Mahomes. By the time the second half rolled around, he was clearly dropping his eyes to the line of scrimmage immediately and bailing out.
The bad news for the rest of the NFL is that Philadelphia isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The Eagles have a young team, most of whom are under contract for the foreseeable future. This could well be the first of many for a team with a ridiculous number of weapons at its disposal.
