Miserabs are out there on social media and standing at the company water cooler, comparing the 2025 Eagles to the 2023 Eagles, a stance based primarily on the fact that the Birds offense looks a little janky under a first-year offensive coordinator. You even get the sense that some of the fake news media is waiting for a Birds collapse, so that they can have something to complain about, because all of this winning is much less interesting to talk about.

That’s the CliffsNotes. Desai was demoted in the middle of the season for Matt Patricia, who was just as much of a disaster. The linebacking corps was not good and the secondary didn’t play half as well as it did in 2022. Then Desai was fired along with Johnson and his four verticals, and the Birds wiped the slate clean for 2024.
Defense is the main thing that scuppers this comparison. Not only did the Eagles keep their defensive coordinator from the 2024 Super Bowl season, but that defensive coordinator is Vic Fangio. They have continuity in defensive leadership. Desai wasn’t even part of the organization when he was hired. Fangio is back for year #2 and Howie Roseman went out and got him Jihaad Campbell and Drew Mukuba while extending Zack Baun. So that’s largely similar to what happened in 2024, when Fangio took a defense with rookies and sophomores and free agents and turned it into football’s best unit.
On the offensive side, note that Kevin Patullo was in the Eagles organization longer than Brian Johnson when he was promoted. Johnson was here for two years as QB coach, and did not have NFL coaching experience at the time. What he did have was a longstanding connection with Jalen Hurts. Patullo had four years here in two different roles, but stints with the Colts, Jets, Titans, Bills, and Chiefs going back to 2007.
So there’s not much here to prop up this claim, that the 2025 Eagles look like the 2023 Eagles. This is people making a very loose observation that the Birds are 4-0 despite the offense looking clunky, and therefore you have this suggestion that maybe it’s unsustainable. Maybe a similar collapse is inevitable. More problematic is that assorted jabronies are trying to will this into existence, because they love Negadelphia and would rather say “I told you so” than see the Eagles win football games.
