The big news of the week was that veteran linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who has been out all season, was designated to return from the injured reserve and participated in practice. He has put in back-to-back limited sessions, which leaves his status for Sunday’s game vs. the Giants in doubt, but even if he does play, it appears it will be on a limited basis.
Broncos Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph met with the media on Thursday and was asked about Greenlaw. He told reporters that if Greenlaw does play this week, it will be in a “part-time role”. He added that they are not sure if he will suit up this week yet or not, but that Greenlaw is in good spirits, has worked hard, and has the right mindset.
Today’s practice will likely determine whether or not Greenlaw will play this Sunday. If he puts in another limited session, we may see him held out for one more week as the team eases him back into action. However, if he puts in a full practice, we could see the Broncos veteran linebacker active on Sunday and play on a limited basis. He is still on the injured reserve, so the team will need to activate him and make room for him on the 53-man roster on Saturday, so we’ll know for sure then.
The fact that Greenlaw is back at practice, has put in back-t0-back limited sessions and appears trending towards returning to the field either this Sunday or next, is great news for the Broncos. They signed him to be their answer in the middle of their defense, but due to a pesky quad injury, he has remained sidelined. If he has finally put that nagging injury behind him and is ready to contribute, the already dominant Denver Broncos defense will get even better as we head towards midseason and an eventual postseason push.
We’ll know more later today, but as of now, if Greenlaw does play this Sunday vs. the Giants, expect the Broncos to ease him back into action and use him in a “limited role”.
