After another elite season, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon is reportedly closing in on a potential record-setting contract. The Seahawks may be closer than ever to securing the long-term future of one of the NFL’s premier defensive players.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, negotiations between Seattle and Witherspoon have advanced significantly. The report also states that the Seahawks have offered Witherspoon a contract worth around $32 million per year, a figure that would place him as the new highest paid cornerback in NFL history.
Rapoport also mentioned the ongoing negotiation between the New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez, whom like Witherspoon is represented by Athletes First, meaning each contract could influence the other as the top of the cornerback market continues to evolve.
The reported offer reflects the reality of today’s market.
Trent McDuffie currently leads all cornerbacks with a contract averaging $31 million per year, followed closely by Sauce Gardner at $30.1 million and Derek Stingley Jr. at $30 million annually. If Seattle’s reported offer exceeds the $30 million threshold, Witherspoon would immediately join that exclusive tier and could even surpass McDuffie depending on the final structure of the deal.
From Seattle’s perspective, there is little incentive to wait. Another major extension elsewhere could raise the market yet again, making an eventual agreement even more expensive.
Witherspoon has done everything necessary to justify a record-setting extension.
Despite missing time during the regular season, he finished 2025 with 72 tackles, one interception, seven passes defended and a fumble recovery in just 12 games, earning his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection and Second-Team All-Pro honors.
His impact extended well beyond the regular season. During Seattle’s Super Bowl-winning playoff run, Witherspoon remained one of Mike Macdonald’s most versatile defensive weapons, capping the year with a sack in Super Bowl 60 and a hit that led to Uchenna Nwosu’s game-ending pick-six.
Statistics alone fail to capture his value.
Whether aligned outside, in the slot, blitzing off the edge or matching up against tight ends and receivers alike, Witherspoon has become the centerpiece of Macdonald’s defensive scheme. Few defensive backs possess his combination of physicality, versatility and playmaking ability, making him one of the rare corners capable of altering an opponent’s game plan on a weekly basis.
The Seahawks have never faced immediate pressure to finalize a deal. By exercising Witherspoon’s fifth-year option, the organization already controls his rights through the 2027 season.
Still, Seattle has often preferred to complete major extensions before the regular season rather than allowing negotiations to linger into the fall. With training camp approaching, the next few weeks could provide the ideal window to finalize an agreement.
