The Detroit Lions are ready to reclaim their throne atop the NFC North during the 2026 season. Detroit made some important investments during the offseason, getting back to their gritty identity in the trenches. One Lions player should have a surprisingly big impact on how the offense performs later this fall.
Lions tackle Penei Sewell explained how he plans to attack his position change to left tackle before the 2026 season.
“It’s just different. You’re switching your whole stance and everything, but it is what it is,” Sewell said per ESPN’s Eric Woodyard. “…At the end of the day, you just watch film. Right now, it’s still kind of early so I’m just kind of focusing on myself. As the season goes on, I’ll watch other players and see what they do and take notes.”
This move has been a long time coming for Sewell and the Lions.
It all started when Detroit released Taylor Decker just before the start of NFL free agency. That opened up a big hole at left tackle and a crucial role for keeping QB Jared Goff upright. It did not take long after Decker’s release for Dan Campbell to tease a potential position change for Sewell.
Playing left tackle is not completely new territory for Sewell. He was a full-time starter on the left side during his college career at Oregon. Sewell also played a total of eight games at left tackle during his rookie campaign and looked pretty good.
Of course, the biggest factor could simply be gaining the necessary reps and muscle memory. Sewell now has several seasons under his belt playing exclusively at right tackle. He is bound to need some time to adjust to a new position.
Lions fans should keep an eye on Sewell throughout training camp to monitor his progress.
