Patrick Mahomes is chasing Tom Brady in hopes of one day becoming the greatest quarterback in NFL history. The Kansas City Chiefs star is receiving tips from the G.O.A.T. himself during that pursuit.
On Monday’s “Up & Adams,” Mahomes spoke to Kay Adams about his relationship with Brady. The three-time Super Bowl champion has gotten pointers from the New England Patriots legend, who is now calling NFL games on FOX.
“I’ve actually talked to Tom a good amount this offseason, and it’s cool that he wants to give me advice,” Mahomes said. “You know, he doesn’t have to be like that. He’s such a good dude, and I have so much respect for him. I’ll take any advice he gives me.”
When asked about Brady’s best wisdom, Mahomes joked about protecting his former AFC rival’s secrets before discussing the 47-year-old’s mindset.
“He always talks about being yourself,” Mahomes said. “He thinks that, which I truly believe too, is that guys can spot when you’re not authentic, and you’re not putting in the work. That’s something he did every day, and it’s why guys respect him so much.
“That’s all I’m gonna do for the rest of my career — and I feel like I’ve done so far — is I’m always myself. No matter if you like me or you don’t like me, you know that I’m giving everything I can to win the football game.”
The elite duo had some high-stakes encounters near the end of Brady’s career. Brady twice shielded Mahomes from making ground on his record seven rings by eliminating Kansas City in the 2019 AFC Championship Game with New England and leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl LV triumph over the Chiefs.
Along with preserving his legacy, Brady has another reason not to help Mahomes. He’s a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, who are looking to end Kansas City’s streak of nine straight AFC West titles.
Mahomes should get a chance to play in front of Brady this September, as FOX is televising a Super Bowl rematch between Kansas City and the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2.
