Through the spring and summer, we will be counting down the Jets roster player by player. We continue the series by discussing Jowon Briggs.
Name: Jowon Briggs
Number: 91
Year With Jets: 2nd
Projected Role: Starting defensive tackle
His 2025: The Jets acquired Briggs at the end of training camp in a move that was something of a surprise. The deal with the Cleveland Browns involved a late round pick swap. Briggs was unlikely to make the Browns roster so Cleveland took anything it could get.
In a lost year for the Jets, Briggs ended up as a rare pleasant surprise. He started the season giving the team quality snaps as a rotational tackle. After the Quinnen Williams trade, Briggs took on a starting role. His performance level rose with the increased workload.
From Weeks 10-18, Briggs posted the following rankings among qualified defensive tackles, per Pro Football Focus:
Does this mean Briggs is a top ten interior defensive lineman in the league? Probably not. It’s reasonable to expect some degree of regression over the long run. Still, the former seventh round pick out of Cincinnati looks like a keeper.
2026 will be a success if: Briggs is a plus starter at one of the defensive tackle spots for the Jets. He will turn 25 shortly before the start of the season so there is potential for him to grow. If he could sustain that late season flourish and actually become a star, it would be great. But just getting a good, young starter for a late round pick swap is a major victory for Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey.
Odds of making the roster: Lock (>99%)
